The Russian developers of “NPO Mashinostroyeniya” told journalists of the TV channel “Zvezda” in the program “Military Reception” about the capabilities of the combat heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser “Admiral Kuznetsov”. Unlike most carriers of other States, the Russian “Kuznetsov” is an aircraft carrying cruiser. It not only bears jets and helicopters on board, and it’s not just a floating airfield, but a real warship.

The most powerful weapon on “Admiral Kuznetsov” – 12 “Granit” heavy missiles. The weight of each is 7 tons, with a range of up to 700 km. According to the developers, these missiles are “smart” and maintain communication between them.

“What are the features of this missile: when they are launched, they are all positioned in one information field. And exchange information among themselves in this field. Approaching the destination, where the target group is, the missiles are arranged in a certain formation, like a flock of birds, look at this order, and then, exchanging information between them, start the target distribution and choose to defeat each specific aim. I.e., they decide between themselves, with help of intelligent control systems, which missile will go to which specific aim,” said Deputy Director General for systems with cruise missile “Military Industrial Complex NPO Mashinostroyeniya” Anatoly Svintsov in an interview with “Zvezda”.

The “smart” missiles work in teams – one provision for all and all for one.

“It was calculated and assigned by our technical task that with one carrier, it’s possible to hit a aircraft-carrier group. An aircraft carrier is on the move, around him are 3 cruisers, and with one shot (“Granit” missiles) we can hit the aircraft carrier and everything else at the same time,” said Anatoly Svintsov.

In NATO, these missiles are called “shipwreck”. With one volley of “Granite” it is possible to completely destroy the group of enemy ships. After the recent modernization of “Kuznetsov”, it has learned to fire “Granites” at coastal fortifications.

The new episode of the “Military Reception” program is devoted to the cruiser “Admiral Kuznetsov”. It is precisely on “Kuznetsov” that the world’s first system ski-jump take-off aircraft appeared, this is the only on in the world aircraft carrier on which heavy fighter jets can land and take off. In addition, viewers will visit the Krylov research centre, where all Russian carriers are developed.

but why now, when is “Admiral’ on Syrian coast, there is no operations with aircraf form carrier?

  • Ollie Richardson

It’s called leverage – Obama abandoned his guys in East Aleppo as a result. Nothing else is needed until later when it’s time to hit Idlib.

As far as I’m aware, that accident was caused by an engine failure, and nothing onboard the ship was damaged.
