The leader of the Organization of the Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, forbidden in the Russian Federation) Nikolay Kokhanovsky urged the residents of Kiev to come out on May 9th for an action under the name “Death Regiment”. On his page on Facebook he demanded not to allow “a vatnik sabbath” and “to stop freaks” that are going to carry out an “immortal regiment”. Kokhanovsky stated that participants of the action of memory try to “tear apart the red-black battle flag” of Ukrainian nationalists. The head of OUN suggested that his supporters meet on May 9th at 9:30 in the morning at the Arsenalnaya metro station in Kiev.
Earlier the adviser to the Interior Minister of Ukraine Zoryan Shkiryak urged citizens of the country not to wear St. George’s Ribbons during the celebration of the victory over fascists. He explained that the sight of this symbol can cause a “logical and objectively correct reaction for the Ukrainian patriot and citizen”.
After the “Maidan” of 2014, Ukraine stopped celebrating Victory Day on May 9th. The main celebrations there take place now one day earlier, as it is in European countries.
The action “Immortal Regiment” for the first time took place in 2012 in Tomsk. This year the memorable procession will take place not only in Russian cities, but also in Athens, Thessaloniki, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Riga, Beijing, Paris, Nice, and Marseille.
Anatoly Wasserman, publicist, political scientist:
“Kiev and its vicinities are now captured by the successors of precisely those who lost on May 9th, 1945. And of course, they don’t like to be reminded about their past shame and preparation of their future defeats.
So it is quite clear why in connection with Victory Day officials such as Poroshenko or representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and also non-officials, like terrorists from the Organization of the Ukrainian Nationalists, are fiercely indignant.
Victory Day reminds the Ukrainian authorities and nationalists about the inevitability of their defeat.
They don’t like people celebrating the past victory over rats. It is clear to all that history is quite logical and there will be further victories.
And for now, of course, it is a pity that rats not only squeal, but also can bite someone. But there’s nothing that can be done. The most important thing is that they will lose this time too”.
