100 Hryvnia, 50 Grams of Alcohol, & Clean Clothes: How Former ATO Soldiers Make Money in Civilian Life

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

Surprisingly, the militants participating in the murder of the residents of Donbass find themselves lost in peaceful life. Many of them, coming back home from the so-called ATO, simply become inveterate drunkards, beating their wives and children. Some try to enter certain public organizations, creating all-familiar crews from the 1990’s. Others go to rallies to make money. Especially as every day in Ukraine there are too many of them.

“Now many former battalion members were organized in different associations of ATO veterans. In every region there are several such organizations with different signs. Also there are the Donbass and Azov battalions, as well as National Corpus. But National Corpus is somehow financed, and guys go there who have hope for the future, even for a political career,” said one of the former participants of “Hunt separatists”.

According to him National Corpus is financed by structures of the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov, which, however, isn’t a secret.

Also the “hero of the ATO” shed light on the organization of all kinds of “protest” actions.

“The others participate in various actions, rallies, business in-fighting. The leaders of associations, as a rule, receive financing and bring together such a group, which is then sent to an action. They are paid 100–150 UAH an hour, are fed, provided a lunch, they are served 50 grams of alcohol. If they also give a new clean uniform — it is perfect,” he said.

So now it is clear why there are so many people on “Mikho-Maidan”. However, in comparison with quotations for Maidan of 2013-2014, it’s not a lot.

As a reminder, currently outside the Rada in Kiev the militants of the voluntary battalions “Donbass” and “Azov” take part in the ongoing Mikhail Saakashvili’s veche.

On the first day, October 17th, they clashed with security officers protecting parliament. In the evening of the same day skirmishes repeated. Later the “protesters”, according to the instructions of the organizer of the “anti-corruption” protest, the leader of the “Movement of New Forces” Mikhail Saakashvili started not allowing People’s Deputies to leave the parliament building until they meet their demands. According to information in the media, among the protesters there are many Right Sector militants, who were given the order not to draw attentions to themselves and to remove their chevrons.
