A Captured Ukrainian Serviceman Knelt and Wept in Front of the Monument to the Killed Children of Donbass

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

Life in Donbass considerably differs from the stories that the Kiev media tells every day to the residents of Ukraine. The captured serviceman of UAF Vitaly Chmel, who was shown the consequences of war, was also convinced of this.

What surprised the serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, whose unit daily shells the peaceful settlements of the Donetsk People’s Republic despite the fact that in Donbass there is a ceasefire regime? Vitaly Chmel is in the UAF under contract and was taken prisoner by the army of the DPR. What was seen by the captured Ukrainian military serviceman on the streets of Donetsk forced him not only to think deeply.

The captured Ukrainian soldier [after being interrogated – ed] was driven around those places of Donetsk that have suffered most of all from the aimed attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During 4 years of war in Donbass not only houses, but also the fates of the people living here were damaged. According to the serviceman, his grandfather defended the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War near Smolensk. And he himself considers that May 9th is the Day of the Great Victory of the Soviet people over Nazism.

Old woman to the UAF serviceman (she told him that she has already buried all her relatives): “You destroyed our houses and killed.”

Vitaly Chmel: “We are told and shown opposite things.”

Old woman: “You are told opposite things, but we have this [destruction]!”

Meeting face-to-face the residents affected by the shelling of districts was much more difficult for him than the conversation with the investigator. The fighter of the UAF burst into tears and knelt before the monument to the killed children of Donbass. Only when he came to the other side did he realise what orders the Ukrainian commanders are giving to the soldiers.

As it turned out, the existence of a school in the Kievsky district of Donetsk is a surprise for Vitaly Chmel. It is precisely this educational institution that on October 1st, 2014, came under fire – units of the UAF struck the school using MLRS “Uragan”.

After this the Ukrainian serviceman was brought to Angel Avenue, which makes the eyes well up. At the monument there are the names of those children who could’ve gone to school, laughed, played joyfully, could’ve fulfilled their dreams, but their lives were taken away by the Armed Forces of Ukraine acting on the orders of Kiev and Washington. Here the captured UAF serviceman fell to his knees and started to cry.

In turn, the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Aleksey Zhuravko commented on this news on his Facebook. According to him, it is impossible to watch the video without tears. Further, he advised all Ukrainian soldiers to look at this video.

“This captured UAF soldier tells the truth. I have actually visited Donbass. I traveled everywhere in a wheelchair. I was in the airport, which was destroyed by the UAF and cyborgs, I went to the railway station. I went to the Kievsky district, to Gorlovka, to Zaitsevo. I personally visited the Angel Avenue in memory of the children of Donbass who have died. It is impossible to forget it. It is all still in my memory, it’s always on my mind. I appeal to officers of the UAF. Look at and think about the words that are said by your brother-soldier Vitaly Chmel. Especially when he fell to his knees in front of the monument featuring the names of the children who were killed by this government,” wrote Zhuravko.
