ATO Military Prosecutor: “When Riots Will Start in Ukraine, We Will Envy Syria”

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The military Prosecutor of the “ATO” Konstantin Kulik said that if mass riots start in Ukraine, the situation may become much worse than in Syria.

“I wouldn’t like us to arrive at a point where we would envy Syria because there they had people who went out in the streets without weapons, but here there is already a huge quantity that were withdrawn from the ATO zone, meaning everyone who wishes to participate in riots can be armed with them,” he said in an interview to Ukrainian media.

Thus, according to him, the bandits have already outlined their objectives.

“I think that today such groups already have plans ready for robberies in Kiev, the objects and victims are planned, because the bandits will confront the issue of timing, to try to seize everything at once.

At the same time they will be armed and have experience of warfare in urban environments. In case of attempts to implement such a scenario in Kiev, it will be a huge challenge to neutralize them,” said Kulik.

The greatest danger, in his opinion, are the militants of the National Guard and punitive battalions, lovingly created by the Ukrainian authorities.

“Personally, I don’t see clear organization for control over their activity. I see that they consist of many persons who were previously convicted for various crimes. There were cases when we arrested fighters of such volunteer battalions for committing a crime, and some of them had three or four convictions. Meanwhile, these individuals are illegally operating as active members of law enforcement bodies on the country.

To our questions the leadership of the National Guard explained such a situation by the fact they didn’t have time to vet everyone who was willing to serve in the National Guard. So we accepted them on the principle — I am a patriot, and am ready to serve. Maybe at first it was necessary to do it, but we need to understand that the true nature of the bandit will still prevail,” factually stated the Prosecutor.

“I see the danger especially lies in misunderstanding which individual can informally lead these persons,” he added.

“And the worst thing is that in the case of participation in riots, such “volunteer battalions” will hide behind patriotism. For example, a former convict Konstantin Grishin, who on the wave of patriotism, as a project of the special services, became People’s Deputy of Ukraine Semen Semenchenko [he changed his name by deed poll – ed], and now he is walking with a group of people terrorizing the courts in Kiev, and is trying to free more arrested prisoners and recruit them into his group.

Here the quote of the writer Huxley comes to mind: {One of the great attractions of patriotism – it fulfils our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what’s more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous.}

It isn’t enough to say with impunity, but with a sense of self-righteousness. “This is exactly what displays the essence of these pseudo-patriots,” resumed Kulik.
