Expert: Trump’s Victory Is a Bad Sign for Poroshenko and The “Party of War”

The victory of Republican Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the United States is a “bad sign” for the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and representatives of the Ukrainian “party of war”, said the Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Analysis and Management of Policy Ruslan Bortnik.

According to the latest reports, Republican Donald Trump won a victory in the US Presidential elections. The US presidential candidate from the Democratic party Hillary Clinton called Trump and conceded defeat in the elections.

“Trump’s victory is a very bad sign for Poroshenko and his entourage, especially the “party of war” Yatsenyuk, Turchynov, and others. For them it would mean the end of the political era and at minimum a bet on other people,” said Bortnik to RIA Novosti.

He also believes that Trump’s victory will mean a revision of US policy, if not for the whole of Ukraine, then for the Ukrainian government.

“This revision lies in a wide range, and the width of this range depends on the understandings or misunderstandings (USA) with Russia on the division of spheres of influence. Relatively speaking, this range is from betting on alternative pro-Western elites (in Ukraine)… to phasing out its influence in Ukraine, its reduction, transformation of policy of Ukraine for joint supervision with Russia,” said Bortnik.

However, he said that it could be that the US will not abandon its support for Ukraine, but will not bet on Poroshenko, and other people.

In any case, the expert believes that this conditional range will depend on whether he can negotiate with Russia. Bortnik emphasized that real changes in US policy towards Ukraine are not expected before February 2017.
