Facebook will open an office in the Latvian capital that will be engaged in moderating posts made by its users in languages of the Baltic States and also in Russian.

This was reported by the “Delfi.lv” website with reference to the leadership of Facebook and its subcontractor.

It is reported that the about 150 employees at the Riga office will trace posts in the languages of the Baltic States (Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian) and also in Russian. The office in Riga in 2019, at the request of Facebook, will be opened by the German company CCC (Competence Call Center). Checking how the posts of users meet the standards of the social network will be the main task of the Riga department.

“People who believe that they saw content that does not meet the rules report about this to us. After we use a combination of automatic decisions and human participation. Participation of a person is very important. Considering our size, you can imagine the number of messages that we receive”

According to him, when it comes to “hate speech”, it is important that the moderator knows the language. That’s why people who know the languages of Eastern Europe will work in Riga. It is specified that it is planned to expand the “linguistic circle” in the near future.

At the moment the moderation of posts on Facebook is done by about 30,000 people.
