Most of the inhabitants of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (the DPR and LPR) that left Donbass in 2014 have returned to the regions, reported the head of the DPR Aleksandr Zakharchenko and the head of the LPR Igor Plotnitsky.
“In 2014, in the heat of fighting, in Donetsk there were 220,00-230,000 people. Today in Donetsk – there are nearly 1 million people,” said Zakharchenko at a press conference in Simferopol on 17.01.17.
Plotnitsky, in turn, reported that more than 90% of the inhabitants who left the region during active fighting have returned to the LPR.
“Today we have a 92-93% return of refugees. Those who remained (outside LPR) are only those who don’t want to come back, or have other beliefs,” said Plotnitsky.
Meanwhile in November, 2016, the press service of the Civil service of Ukraine on emergency situations reported about more than 1 million temporarily displaced persons from the Donetsk and Lugansk regions and Crimea.
In turn, the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation at the beginning of 2016 reported that since the beginning of the conflict in Donbass nearly 2 million residents of Ukraine have come to Russia.
