On May 9th the Day of Victory over fascism in World War II was celebrated. In Ukrainian cities commemorative events and actions took place. “Strana” looked at how the territories Ukraine no longer controls – Donbass and Crimea – celebrated this day.
Simferopol
In the capital of Crimea a military parade took place, which the staff of units of the Simferopol garrison and a mechanised column of military equipment were involved in. On Kirova avenue the national flag of Russia and the Banner of Victory was displayed. During the Military memorial cemetery flowers were laid in memory of the dead.
Sevastopol
In Sevastopol since the morning naval flags and the Russian flag were raised on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet. After that in the city center wreaths and flowers were laid at the Memorial in honor of the heroic defense of Sevastopol in 1941-1942.
The parade began under the sounds of the song “Sacred War”. A banner-holding group with the national flag of the Russian Federation and the copy of the banner of Victory came to the square.
1,450 people took part in the parade. These were the military personnel of the Black Sea Fleet, units of the Southern military district deployed in Sevastopol, cadets of the Nakhimov Black Sea highest naval school, and troops of the National Guard of Russia, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and other governmental departments.
Donetsk
More than 50 units of arms and military equipment were involved in the parade in Donetsk, which passed down Artema Street. Earlier it was stated that the Soviet T-34 tank from the World War II era will be one of the first to pass in the column, and also various artillery systems, MLRS, and other equipment of the DPR will be presented.
The Minister of Defence of the DPR Vladimir Kononov stated that they are going “to be equal with Russia”. In addition, South Ossetia also took part in the parade in the republic.
Many Donetsk citizens remember the parade because of a dog that chased cars and barked at the military servicemen.

Lugansk
A parade also took place in Lugansk. The head of the LPR Leonid Pasechnik launched it. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic Igor Kornet dressed up in a generalissimo uniform. The parade of military equipment and weapons was headed by the T-34 tank, restored after the damage it received from shelling.
