Kiev Resident During the “Immortal Regiment”: In 2014 There Was a Coup d’État, Fascist Forces Came to Power

On Thursday, May 9th, solemn events in honour of Victory Day over Nazism in the Great Patriotic War were held throughout the country. The journalist of the Ukrainian “Strana” news agency, which acted in opposition to Petro Poroshenko during his five year tenure, visited the “Immortal Regiment” procession in Kiev and learned from the participants how they relate to this holiday, as well as to the initiative of the authorities to abolish it. The response of one man in particular summarised very well why celebrating May 9th is very important.

He highlighted the fact that in 2014 a coup d’etat took place in Kiev, that the junta has imposed fascism, or if to be more precise – Banderism – on the whole country ever since, and that the purpose of this desecration of the memory of Great Patriotic War Heroes is to gradually erase the memory of the Soviet Union and its feats. And he is far from being the only one in Kiev who thinks this – as we learnt earlier. Perhaps now that Poroshenko has been ousted the people of Ukraine may start to speak much more openly and fearlessly about Washington’s unconstitutional seizure of power five years ago.
