The Ordzhonikidzevsky district court of Kharkov has found the 84-year-old Kharkov scientist Mekhti Logunov guilty of State treason and sentenced him to 12 years of imprisonment [this is the first instance of someone in Ukraine being charged with State treason since Maidan – ed]. As the press service of the prosecutor’s office of the Kharkov region reports, the man has been condemned for collecting for the benefit of Russia information about the State defense orders of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

In the message it is claimed that, “working to the detriment of the defense capability and State security of Ukraine, he (Logunov) collected information about a State defense order that is being carried out by one of the scientific centers of the city on the basis of agreements with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine”.

The press service of the prosecutor’s office of the Kharkiv region told the correspondent of the Interfax Ukraine agency that the prosecution demanded tougher punishment.

The lawyer of Logunov Dmitry Tikhonenkov stated that he intends to appeal against the sentence.

“In fact, the court pronounced a conviction based on the testimonies of only one witness, who, as Logunov considers, staged a provocation against him. The testimonies of other witnesses (and they were about 15) weren’t reflected in the sentence,” said Tikhonenkov to the correspondent of the agency.

Logunov is in custody in accordance with the demand of the prosecutor’s office. He was detained by the SBU in August, 2017.
