In Ukraine on April 27th at a meeting of the permanent Commission of the Kiev City Council concerning local self-governance, regional, and international links, Deputies agreed on a draft bill about the announcement of 2017 on the territory of Kiev as the Year of UPA.
This was reported by the press service of the Kiev City Council.
“In the framework of the year of UPA, it is proposed to hold the relevant thematic informational, educational, cultural, and artistic and other activities in educational institutions, to hold a number of scientific-practical conferences, to organize exhibitions of archival documents, material memories, and photographic materials,” it is noted in the message.
The relevant draft bill must be considered by the permanent Commission on questions of culture, tourism, and information policy.
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army was formed in October, 1942, as a military wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. UPA operated mainly in western Ukraine and fought against Soviet troops, cooperating with Nazi’s. After the end of the Great Patriotic War it continued to act against the Soviet power via extremist methods — the representatives of the intelligentsia and local authorities, Komsomol and party activists became the victims of UPA fighters.
