Kurt Volker Advised Ukrainians Who to Vote for in the Second Round

The special representative of the US State Department to Ukraine Kurt Volker said that the president of Ukraine undertook many more reforms than anyone else in the country over the last 20 years, and the favourite of an electoral campaign Vladimir Zelensky only promises reforms.

The American diplomat said this during an interview with the American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) on the topic of the presidential race in Ukraine.

“[Zelensky is] a candidate who has established himself as against the establishment vs. the incumbent president, who is saying that, you know, I have worked hard, I have made a lot of accomplishments, we have more to do. And now the Ukrainian public is faced with this choice. Do they want someone who is just going against the establishment, promising massive reform? Or do they want someone who maybe has been disappointing to them in some respects, but has done more on reform than anyone else has in Ukraine for the past 20 years and stood up to Putin?” said the special representative of the US State Department to Ukraine Kurt Volker.

The journalist specified whether the politician means the president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, and he answered in the affirmative.

At the same time, Volker noted that it is still unclear who will win in the second round: the acting head of state or the candidate from the party “Servant of the People” Vladimir Zelensky, who won in the first round with 30.24% of the vote.

On the eve of the first round the US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch published a video in which she urged the citizens of Ukraine to come on March 31st to polling stations and use their electoral right in order to, as she claimed, contribute to the development of democracy in the country. At the same time, she and other American politicians emphasised that Washington does not support any specific Ukrainian presidential candidate.
