The Ukrainian businessman Igor Kolomoisky said that Ukraine should have declared a default in 2014. He expressed such an opinion in an interview with the journalist Sonya Koshkina.
“How is a default bad? Look at how beautiful Greece is: they said that they won’t return 500 billion, and goodbye,” said Kolomoisky.
“I consider that (this scenario) needed to be implemented in 2014, because the country [Ukraine – ed] had been plundered under the patronage of – amongst other parties – the International Monetary Fund and all foreign embassies. If there is zero in the treasury – well, declare a default,” considers the oligarch.
He stated that this would not do irreparable harm to Ukraine. “A default never harmed anyone. If it’s a country, this is 100%. Let’s say, for example, that I have no money. And what is the difference between bankruptcy and a default? You say it like a default is the end of statehood. Has Greece lost even one island from its statehood?” said Kolomoisky, giving an example.
