Oleg Tsarev: How Much Did Poroshenko’s Conversation With Trump About Hurricane Irma Cost the Taxpayer?

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The Ukrainian regime spent considerable efforts in order to provide Poroshenko’s meeting with Trump. On the one hand, a fair quantity of questions were accumulated, and on the another hand, it is extremely important for Poroshenko to secure Trump’s support as opposed to the support that Trump’s administration now publicly provides in Ukraine to Mikheil Saakashvili.

The meeting was organized through the American lobbyists, and it is difficult even to assume how much it cost the Ukrainian taxpayers. Just for the last photoshoot with the US President the Ukrainian authorities paid half a million dollars. For the meeting Trump-Klimkin Bankova Street [Kiev – ed] handed over $400,000. If Poroshenko handed over half a million for the photoshoot, then it is possible so say with confidence that the hour-long meeting with an exit to the press should cost many times more. However, the sum paid for the meeting will anyway become known to us. This information, according to the requirements of American legislation concerning lobbyist companies, must be published within 6 months on the official websites of the US Department of Justice. The name of the company is known – “BGR Group”, which Poroshenko’s team employed before last year for foreign PR of the Guarantor of the nation. The American partners all this time took $50,000 a month for their services on “promoting” the Ukrainian President  – the Ukrainian press has written about this more than once.

A considerable, paid-in-advance (stipulated before the meeting) sum of money had to provide solutions for a whole list of important questions. According to this agreement with lobbyists, during the meeting the issues of the delivery to Ukraine of lethal weapons and the allocation to Ukraine from $500,000,000 to $1,500,000,000 of aid from the US had to be resolved. Poroshenko wanted to ask the American President to assist in the assignment of IMF and World Bank means, and also to organize pressure on Europe with the aim of accelerating the adoption of the “Marshall Plan” for Ukraine.

Trump and Poroshenko’s meeting took place on the fields of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, September 21st. Many questions were discussed during the one-hour meeting. According to the officials accompanying the Guarantor, Poroshenko is sharply dissatisfied with the meeting’s result. The Presidents discussed questions of personal health, and talked about life. They discussed the weather and the consequences of the last hurricane for the US. They agreed that Ukraine is not the easiest place for life, but thus, eventually, everything will be good. As soon as Petro Poroshenko tried to bring up questions that worried him, Donald Trump immediately changed the subject and transferred conversation to topics that weren’t interesting at all for the Ukrainian President.

I don’t know about you, but I have a dual feeling. On the one hand, I am glad that the meeting for Poroshenko was without result, and on the other hand, I, as a citizen of Ukraine, regret this expenditure of money. Yes, although the budget of Ukraine is now at Poroshenko’s disposal, but it’s still mine and your money. And after it was spent on American lobbyists, we won’t see it any more.
