Oleg Tsarev: Poroshenko Exploits Prisoner Exchanges to Boost His Dismal Approval Rating

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

Kiev is dragging out the process of exchanging prisoners between Donbass and Ukraine and wants to postpone it either until New Year, or until the presidential elections in March, 2019. This was reported by the Commissioner for Human Rights in the DPR Darya Morozova, Donetsk requests 283 persons, from who the Ukrainian side confirms only 82 prisoners for exchange. The ombudswoman also noted that the exchange process is “completely politised”.

The former speaker of the parliament of Novorossiya Oleg Tsarev on the air of NSN said that the president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko tries by all means to improve his approval rating and deliberately delays the solving of the issue.

“Prisoner exchanges long ago became a method of PR, which a number of politicians competes among themselves to receive. Poroshenko is now collecting crumbs for his approval rating: he opens rural midwife centers, he goes to weddings, and he cuts ribbons. He in general does everything to raise his approval rating even by a slight amount. And he also wants to dominate the task of exchanging prisoners. In order so the effect is the largest, he moves it back closer to the elections,” said the politician.

It should be noted that the official representatives of Ukraine also ignored the last subgroup meetings on prisoner exchanges. The last exchange of prisoners took place on December 27th, 2017, and Ukraine at the time declared its determination to carry out the second stage, but the parties still haven’t started it.
