Oleg Tsarev: Tymoshenko Struck a Blow to Poroshenko’s Reelection Hopes

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The leader of the All-Ukrainian Union “Fatherland” Yulia Tymoshenko said that the President of Ukraine Poroshenko can impose martial law in the country and cancel the presidential elections that are supposed to take place in 2019. At the same time she noted that Poroshenko holds negotiations with representatives of the DPR and LPR on this topic. The head of the DPR Aleksandr Zakharchenko has already refuted this statement.

According to the politician Oleg Tsarev, Tymoshenko thus emphasised the current precarious position of the president.

“Yulia Tymoshenko made this statement for several reasons. Firstly, Poroshenko is in a really difficult situation, and it will be extremely difficult for him to be chosen for a new presidential term. There are a number of problems that he hasn’t solved: the series of corruption scandals, his low approval rating, the shortage of support not only from the population, but also among oligarchs and radicals, as well as the lack of a majority in parliament.

Secondly, his situational allies, such as ‘People’s Front‘, obviously, hold negotiations behind his back. He knows it. It is for this same reason that the US is ready to initiate legal proceedings against Poroshenko’s environment. All of this creates such a situation where Poroshenko can indeed try to disrupt the elections. He can opt to do this, and by law there is a possibility: to declare martial law and to cancel elections.

It is clear that in order to implement this, Poroshenko needs to stage a terrible provocation, because people have already got used to troops  in the ranks of the UAF dying. At the same time it is necessary to pay tribute to Tymoshenko: she loses nothing by making such a statement. Now she only emphasises the unstable position of Poroshenko. The more he will be forced to justify himself and be defended, the more it will put him in the negative. And Tymoshenko only benefits from this.

Concerning Poroshenko’s accusations of conspiracy with Zakharchenko, I can say one thing: this is an everyday occurrence. Ukrainian politicians accuse each other all the time of working for the benefit of Putin and Russia, and of carrying out negotiations with ‘separatists’. There is nothing new here”.
