The former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych hoped that Crimea will return under the control of Kiev. But, according to the politician, “it will depend on the inhabitants of the peninsula”.
Yanukovych added that the “cowardly authorities” of Ukraine didn’t oppose the reunion of the peninsula with Russia because it understood that ” in Crimea they will be beaten on the teeth”.
The former speaker of the parliament of Novorossiya Oleg Tsarev in a conversation with the NSN called such statements of Yanukovych an attempt to shield himself.
“No other motive is seen in all of Yanukovych’s actions and statements than to shield and protect himself. This was also concerning the fighters of ‘Berkut’, who defended him during Maidan, and who he accused of abusing their powers. Now the statement concerning Crimea against the background of the court, I will repeat, is an attempt to shield himself,” considers Tsarev.
Crimea became a part of the Russian Federation in 2014 following the results of a referendum, where the vast majority of inhabitants voted in favor of a reunion with Russia.
After this the countries of Europe and the US imposed sanctions against Moscow, although the vote took place in compliance with the international standards and requirements.
