Poroshenko-Merkel Talks: Mythical “Russian Aggression” as a Last Stand

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The head of “independent” Ukraine asked the Bundestag to recognize the genocide of Ukrainian people.

Against the background of an unprecedented aggravation of the situation in Donbass, Poroshenko went to Germany for a meeting with Frau Merkel to persuade her not to remove the Russian sanctions. The Ukrainian media described this topic of negotiations almost the main subject of the meeting.

(Video above, from 30.01.17, shows one of the many results of the UAF’s daily shelling of Donbass. Makeevka came under intense shelling by Kiev, and consequently a woman lost her life. Others in the settlement were severely wounded. All this on the same day when Poroshenko was due to speak to Merkel about “Russian aggression”, while his army continues to massacre civilians of Donbass.)

Although it is clear that, having lost the patron in the person of the USA, the Ukrainian president is urgently looking for a new boss. Angela Merkel, with her hard line in relation to Russia, seems to be the best of all for this role. In addition, from the German Chancellor Poroshenko, most likely, hopes to learn the essence of telephone negotiations that were conducted during the week-end by the new head of the White House with Angela Merkel, François Hollande, and Vladimir Putin. As Trump has communicated to all members of the “Normandy group”, except for Petro Poroshenko, suspicion that the destiny of Ukraine will be decided without her participation, the authorities of “Independent” Ukraine are haunted by this.

The Ukrainian media name also one more “strategically important” purpose of the visit of Petro Poroshenko — to look attentively at the new Foreign Minister of Germany Sigmar Gabriel, who has replaced Steinmeier. Gabriel previously declared that sanctions against Russia need to be reduced, or removed completely. However, since occupying the chair of the Foreign Minister, he has already spoken more carefully. According to him, sanctions will be continued until the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements. So isn’t the current Donbass “fireworks” in honor of him? It’s as if Merkel and Gabriel wanted to be convinced that there is no possibility to peacefully agree with the Republics; as if, again, the aggression was done supposedly at the suggestion of Russia.

It is precisely about this Poroshenko during the briefing about results of a meeting with Angela Merkel spoke about. The blame for an aggravation of the situation in Donbass he unambiguously hung around the neck of the Russian side, and declared that his purpose is “to return Russia to the negotiating table”. According to him, it is from shells of “pro-Russian fighters” that civilians in Donetsk perish, and it needs to come to an end. Frau Merkel was more reserved, she declared that there is no alternative to the Minsk Agreements, and that the “Normandy Format” of negotiations is the correct way.

While during the first official meeting — with the president of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert — Poroshenko asked the German parliament to recognize Holodomor of the 30’s … as the act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.
