Poroshenko Signs Law That Allows Fining TV & Radio Stations For “Separatism”

Translated by Ollie Richardson

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a law that authorizes the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting to fine TV and radio companies for separatism.

The bill was published on the official website of the Ukrainian Parliament.

The new law allows the National Council to apply sanctions for certain content that, according to authorities, spreads separatist propaganda. It is also noted that if after the first penalty the company does not repeat this violation, then the penalty within the year is eliminated and the warning is cancelled.

According to deputies, such initiatives will help to clean up the information space of Ukraine from manifestations of separatism.

As a reminder, the National Council organized reprisals against the radio station Radio Vesti. According to the head of the media holding Vesti Ukraine Olga Semchenko, the actions of the National Council are a planned campaign against the radio station.
