A Rally Against Censorship of Events in Ukraine Took Place in Prague

Translated by Ollie Richardson

A rally for the democratic principle of freedom of speech and for the truthful informing of the public on events in Donbass took place on 20.03.17 in Prague in the Czech Republic. 30 civil activists gathered in front of the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic. The Deputy of the lower house of Parliament of the country Marta Semelová and the vice-chairman of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (CPBM) Josef Skála came out to support them.

“We gathered to express our disagreement with the introduction in the Czech Republic of censorship about the events in the east of Ukraine. Recently in the structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs the department of counter-terrorism and hybrid threats was created, which in practice is engaged in “filtering” content on the local segment of the Internet, and the identification on the Internet of objectionable resources. These are websites trying to objectively inform about the situation in Donbass,” said the representative of the organizers of the rally Nikola Cech to TASS.

He especially paid attention to the facts of violation of freedom of speech in Ukraine. The Kiev authorities “constantly control social networks, block websites, and lists of undesirable journalists are created”, noted Cech.

Concern about the threat of infringing on the freedom of speech in the Czech Republic due to the unilateral approach of the authorities while assessing the Ukrainian crisis and the role of Russia in its settlement was expressed by six speakers. The rally lasted for an hour. It was organized by the CPBM youth organization “Left Perspective and the Czech public organization “Community of Friends of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic”.
