Safronkov to Britain at the UNSC: “Why Do You Move Your Eyes Away? Don’t You Dare Offend Russia Anymore!”

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vladimir Safronkov stated to the representative of Great Britain Matthew Rycroft: “Don’t you dare offend Russia anymore!”

Rycroft in his speech said that Russia “abuses the right to veto, supports the regime (the authorities of Syria) and the use of chemical weapons”, and also that Moscow has “lost trust”.

According to Safronkov, Rycroft “only thinks about complicating efforts” of the special envoy of the UN on Syria Staffan de Mistura and not to allow the political process to develop, and to bring confrontation and hostility in the UNSC.

“You became afraid, you lost sleep over the fact that we will cooperate with the United States. You are afraid of it. You do everything so that this collaboration is undermined … Look at me, don’t move your eyes away, why do you move your eyes away?” said Safronkov while addressing Rycroft.

According to him, Rycroft imposes offensive demands on the guarantors of a truce in Syria, while London only receives illegal groups. Safronkov stated that London “serves interests of armed groups, many of which slit the throat’s of Christians and other minorities in the Middle East”.

“You completely got confused in your anti-regime ideas, added Safronkov. According to him, the change of regime in Syria is more important for Great Britain than the position of the majority of members of the UN.

“Today you spoke, Mr Rycroft, not according to the agenda of the meeting, you offended Syria, Iran, Turkey, other states. Mr Chairman, I have a request to follow the order of development of the meeting if some people treat their place at the UN Security Council irresponsibly, offensively, while turning to slang. Don’t you dare offend Russia anymore!” said Safronkov.
