The Moscow Patriarchate Won a Court Dispute With the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine

In the final report for last year Metropolitan Antony, who manages the affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed] mentioned that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed] won a lawsuit against the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine on the non-registration of the charters of the dioceses and monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed].

Metropolitan Antony specified that court sessions concerning the claim of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed] against the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine lasted for nearly two years.

Metropolitan Antony explained that the first hearing connected to this case took place in February, 2017:

“The first such hearing took place on February 22, 2017”

Metropolitan Antony said that later, on June 5th, the court satisfied the claim:

“And only on June 5th 2018 did the Kiev district administrative court establish that the Ministry of Culture violated legislation on the non-registration of the charters of the religious organisations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed]”

The Ministry of Culture did not agree with the judgment and appealed against it.

Metropolitan Antony confirmed that in December 2018 the Court of Appeal considered the appeal of the Ministry of Culture and confirmed that the court made the correct decision:

“On December 4th 2018 the Kiev administrative court of appeal validated the judgment of the first instance”

said the hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)

In the report for 2018 Metropolitan Antony also spoke about the increase in the number of parishes, monasteries, and priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed].

Currently enormous pressure is being put on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed], including via claims in court for various reasons.

Also the Ukrainian authorities carry out investigative actions in the temples and houses of priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church [Moscow Patriarchate – ed].

The main aim of this pressure is to force the priesthood to agree to participate in the unifying sobor and the new religious structure created at the initiative of the Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew.
