The Reactor of a Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant Was Loaded with Only American Fuel for the First Time

The reactor of the third power unit of the Southern Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant (SUNPP) that is located in the Nikolaev region is the first plant in the country to be completely loaded only with fuel from the Westinghouse company. This was reported to TASS on Thursday by the enterprise.

“The power unit is completely loaded with fuel cartridges from the Westinghouse company,” said the interlocutor of the agency. He specified that after a planned stoppage the block was once again connected on July 16th to the power supply system. Previously, in this reactor there was fuel from the Russian company TVEL in the mixed cycle. Now the SUNPP discusses the further transfer of the power plants of the country to American-made fuel.

Earlier the Energoatom company prolonged until 2025 the agreement with Westinghouse for the supply of nuclear fuel for the nuclear power plants of Ukraine. In October of last year the Ukrainian company said that its American partner will be able to provide fuel assemblies for 13 power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants if deliveries from Russia are suspended.

In Ukraine 15 power units – 13 with VVER-1000 reactors and 2 with VVER-440 reactors – operate at the sites of four nuclear power plants. All of them were constructed by Soviet experts and designed for fuel elements that are now only produced by the Russian TVEL company.

The operator of the nuclear power plants of Ukraine, the Energoatom company, reported earlier that  four power units of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant completely will switch to American fuel by 2020. Such assemblies have already been loaded into the reactor of the second SUNPP power unit and also the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th power units of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
