In Kiev the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasily Gritsak, according to the press service of the SBU, signed a Memorandum of cooperation in the sphere of… drum roll please… defending human rights with the mission of Freedom House Ukraine, “Ukrainian Institute for Human Rights”, “Expert Centre on Human Rights”, and the “Vostok-SOS” charity foundation.
According to the department, the memorandum stipulates the consolidation of efforts for providing effective prevention of violations of the rights and freedoms of people in the sphere of activity of the SBU by establishing effective democratic civil control.
Within the framework of a pilot project, platforms for interaction at the regional level will be created in the Donetsk, Lugansk, Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson, and Lvov regions.
“Respect for balance between ensuring the rights of people and the right of society to security is a priority of security institutes,” said the head of the the Security Service of Ukraine.
Strengthening institutional opportunities thanks to the improvement and development of constructive dialogue with civil society and international human rights organisations is of special importance for us in the context of transforming the SBU into a modern European intelligence agency
Within the framework of this interaction it is planned to hold joint actions aimed at increasing the level of awareness among security service specialists of Ukraine, members of public councils, and representatives of public associations concerning ensuring the rights and freedoms of people in the work of security bodies, clarifying and solving specific issues in this sphere, and also concerning features of the organisation and ensuring democratic civil control of the SBU’s activity.
