The speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy on the air of the “ICTV” TV channel called Adolf Hitler the “greatest” democrat.
“I am a huge supporter of direct democracy. <…> By the way, I will tell you that Adolf [Hitler -ed] in the 30’s was a great person who practiced direct democracy,” he said.
The politician also added that he studied direct democracy “at the scientific level”, and urged not to forget the Fuhrer’s contribution to its development.
Ukrainian public and political figures have repeatedly made similar radical statements. In April the deputy of the Lvov City Council Maryana Batyuk on social networks wished Hitler a happy birthday, and in May the consul of Ukraine in Hamburg Vasily Marushinets called fascism “honourable” and also posted a version of the flag of Ukraine with a swastika.
