The UN Debunked Ukrainian Propaganda Concerning the Ilovaisk Cauldron

Translated by Ollie Richardson & Angelina Siard

The recent report of the leadership of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights disproves the statements made by Ukrainian propagandists about the Russian side, contrary to agreements,  opening fire during the evacuation of Ukrainian military personnel from the Ilovaisk cauldron. This was reported on the blog of the Odessa journalist Yury Tkachev.

He noted that one of key statements of the Kiev myth about the events in Ilovaysk is the following: “Russia promised a corridor for evacuation from encirclement, and then broke its word, having treacherously opened fire at the exiting Ukrainian soldiers”.

Thus the journalist calls to pay attention to information established by the UN concerning these events.

“71. At 1 a.m. on 29 August 2014, the web-portal of the presidency of the Russian Federation posted a statement by President Putin appealing to the armed groups ‘to open a humanitarian corridor for encircled Ukrainian servicemen to avoid unnecessary victims and to allow them to leave the area of hostilities without impediments’. Early in the morning of 29 August, Russian media disseminated a statement of the armed groups in which they supported President Putin’s initiative and expressed their readiness ‘to ensure the security of the withdrawal of Ukrainian servicemen from the encirclement with the condition that they shall pass through the created corridor without their weapons’. Reportedly, representatives of the Russian troops near Ilovaisk passed the same proposal to Ukrainian forces early in the morning of 29 August.

72. These proposals were not accepted by the Ukrainian military command. At 8 a.m. on 29 August, Ukrainian forces, with their weapons and ammunition, moved in two columns of armoured military vehicles, military and civilian trucks, buses and other vehicles out of the villages of Ahronomichne and Mnohopillia, where they had gathered by 6 a.m. on 29 August. They took two parallel roads heading to Starobesheve town and Novokaterynivka village.

73. Soon after departing, the columns came under intense shelling and small arms and light weapons fire. Hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers were killed or wounded in this attack.”

Tkachev specifies that many Ukrainian military personnel claim with confidence: central command assured them that they will leave along a safe corridor in accordance with the corresponding agreement, although at this moment the offer on granting a corridor had ALREADY BEEN REJECTED by the Ukrainian central command.

“Either the officers commanding the operation had wishful thinking in the conditions of clear confusion, or the soldiers and officers were consciously misled at the cost of their lives in order to stage another act of discrediting the enemy. The OHCHR of the UN really does enormous work to analyse the events of the civil war in Donbass. And of course, for this they should receive the greatest respect,” summarised Tkachev.
