At the very beginning of the civil war in Donbass illegal prisons of the SBU in which people were tortured operated on the territory under Kiev’s control.
This was stated during a press conference of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances by Henrikas Mickevičius, a member of the working group of the UN concerning enforced disappearances.
“We have obtained reliable information about informal places of detention, in particular, about the existence of such places at the very beginning of the conflict. Some of them were improvised places of deduction, some were under the control of the SBU, some of them were in Kramatorsk, Mariupol and Odessa, in the city of Pokrovsk, and also in Kharkov.
In addition, we received testimonies from those persons who were detained there, about torture, humiliation, and other forms of cruel behavior,” noted Mickevičius.
Besides this, he noted that in the DPR and LPR the authorities are open to dialogue.
“The authorities in the so-called DPR and LPR have de facto expressed their desire to resume negotiations for the simultaneous release of prisoners by both sides,” added the UN official.
