A group of teachers at the “Lvov Polytechnic” National University launched an initiative to name the university in honor of Stepan Bandera.

The staff of the department of history, museology, and cultural heritage said that Bandera is “a symbol of the Ukrainian nation, a national hero, and an example of courage”. The teachers also reminded that he remains the most famous historical figure who ever studied at this University.

“Lvov Polytechnic” is the oldest technical college in Ukraine, the University was opened in 1816. Bandera studied at the agronomical office of the university between 1928-1934.

Stepan Bandera is the ideologist and the theorist of Ukrainian nationalism. In the years of World War II he headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), was one of the initiators of the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). He acted mainly in Western Ukraine and fought against Soviet troops, cooperating with Hitler’s fascists.
