Ukrainian Government Allowed the Military to Open Fire on Aircraft Violating the Border

Translated by Ollie Richardson

The Ukrainian government has allowed the military to open fire on aircraft that have breached the border of Ukraine or are suspected of committing terrorist actions. This was reported by the press service of the cabinet on Thursday, referring to the decision made the day before.

“It is possible to open fire after warning fire is ignored,” it is specified by the department.

As was explained by the government, this decision was made “for the adaptation of basic legislative documents concerning defense to modern realities and challenges”.

According to the resolution No. 1012, forces on duty can use weapons and military equipment after warning fire “for the termination of violations of the state border of Ukraine by aircraft of armed groups of other states that don’t issue commands (signals) of planes to duty-interceptors (helicopters)”. In addition, the Ukrainian military can fire warning shots “for the termination of illegal operations of aircraft if they are used for the purpose of implementation of an act of terrorism in the air space, including in the area of the anti-terrorist operation”.

The right to make a decision on opening warning fire by interception aircraft (helicopters) on the target, according to the document, is provided to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of the General Staff – the commander-in-chief of Armed Forces, the commander of the Air Forces, or persons fulfilling their duties.
