US Ambassador Yovanovitch: Ukraine Needs to Increase Gas Prices

Ukraine’s cooperation with the IMF provides pension, anti-corruption reforms, and also an increase in gas prices, which are necessary for Ukraine itself. This was stated by the US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in an interview to the “Novoe Vremya” publication.

“According to our internal analysis, the implementation of the IMF program is critical for Ukraine. It’s not the IMF that needs this, after all, but Ukraine — pension, anti-corruption, an increase in gas prices,” said the US Ambassador.

She also added that the implementation of the cooperation program with the IMF will improve the international image of Ukraine and reminded that without IMF support Ukraine won’t be able to pay off its debts (first and foremost, owed to the Fund).

Earlier the need to increase gas prices for Ukrainians was expressed by the deputy head of the IMF David Lipton: according to him, gas prices in Ukraine are significantly less than they are in neighbouring countries, besides, Ukrainians are able to afford to pay more for gas; at the beginning of the year the minimum wage in the country grew twice.
