The Ukrainian military personnel is well-trained, but the United States helped them to achieve success in Donbass.
This was stated by the US Ambassador in Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in an interview to the Kiev magazine “Novoe Vremya”, answering the question is it worth waiting for military aid from Trump’s administration, and if yes, in what form is it planned.
“Usually we don’t give military aid in a monetary form, but we provide services in the professional development of military personnel, and also equipment. In 2014 we supplied equipment and various training courses to the sum of $750 million. Ukrainian soldiers are brave, well-trained, but I think that our participation also helped to achieve military results in the east,” said the ambassador.
Also she spoke about the prospects of the UAF to completely conform to NATO standards.
“The discussion concerning the Ukrainian army and NATO only began. The President Petro Poroshenko sounded a quite ambitious goal — before 2020 to make the Ukrainian army completely conform to standards of the alliance. There is nothing bad in such ambitiousness, but a lot of things need to be done for this. It’s not so important to be ready to participate in the actions of the alliance, whatever they are concerning other countries in Eastern Europe. It is important to increase the defense capability of the Ukrainian army, so that it strengthens its position in Donbass,” added Yovanovitch.
It is worth noting that it isn’t completely clear what the American diplomat meant when she spoke about the military results the UAF achieved with the help of the US, considering that since August, 2014, the UAF lost all big battles without exception — Ilovaisk, Donetsk airport, Debaltsevo.
