Victory Day? Donbass: Children Were Wounded as a Result of Shelling

While we are preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the war, in fact, continues. On May 7th, five civilians, including two children, were injured as a result of shelling carried out by the armed groups of Ukraine on the village of Sakhanka in the Novoazovsky district – in the south of the DPR.

According to the Donetsk News Agency, a boy and a girl, both born in 2006, were injured. The boy has a fracture of both bones of the right tibia, right elbow bone, and multiple shrapnel wounds on the left tibia and foot. The girl suffered non-penetrating shrapnel wounds to the left temporal area, brain concussion, and left hip abrasions.

Journalist Irina Lashkevich reports that Dima and Nastiya are brother and sister, “Nastenka had heart surgery a couple of years ago, she’s an ill child…”

They need help.

“Dimochka is in surgery, I was in the hospital. I saw him on the operating table. I gave groceries to his mother. Whoever can help, help, he’s from a very poor family. Nastiya’s house was bombed, she and her mother moved to live in a tiny house with Dima. They are brother and sister,” wrote Irina Lashkevich on her Facebook page.

“Dima’s mother. I also handed over things to eat, she was in a hurry, the doctors went to Dima. We will cash out the money tomorrow, you still have the opportunity to send help to Dimka.

Thanks to Oksana Shkoda, she agreed to take the money on her card. It’s not as fun as it looks. She accepts and duplicates receipts for me straight away.”

It should be noted that a total of five civilians – in addition to the children – were injured as a result of the shelling of Sakhanka on May 7th, two 49-year-old men and a 43-year-old woman were injured. According to the press service of the People’s Militia of the DPR, “Ukrainian militants… purposefully shelled a group of civilians who were preparing the monument dedicated to soldiers who died in the Great Patriotic War and were repairing the roof of a nearby rural club in the village of Sakhanka.”

Nearby soldiers of the DPR arrived to help the wounded, evacuation began – and again shelling, one died.

The statement of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the DPR Darya Morozova stated that the shelling was carried out… “in violation of the demands of international humanitarian law to prohibit attacks on civilian objects and attacks of an indiscriminate nature in the course of military operations.”

The DPR Ombudswoman emphasises that the provisions of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War have been violated.

“The actions of the UAF not only undermine the agreement on an indefinite ceasefire, which entered into force on July 21st 2019, but also pose a direct threat to the lives of civilians of Donbass,” her statement reads.

In this regard, Darya Morozova sent appeals to international organizations, calling on the global public “to give a proper legal assessment of Ukraine’s actions and to use all available means to prevent a further escalation of the conflict and to return to peaceful dialogue within the framework of the Minsk negotiation process.”

“I hope that the use of prohibited methods of warfare by the armed groups of Ukraine will not be ignored by the international community,” said the Ombudswoman, whose words were quoted by the official website of the unrecognised Republic.

The head of the DPR Denis Pushilin noted in connection with the incident that Ukraine intensified the shelling on the territory of the Republic, “cynically targeting the houses of civilians”.

“Today, five people, including two 13-year-old teenagers, were injured by the explosion of UAF shells in the village of Sakhanka. Three days ago, three girls and one adult were injured. More recently, a girl from Gorlovka was killed by a grenade dropped from an UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle].

The conclusion is obvious: Ukraine not only kills the residents of Donbass, it targets children, young people,” said Pushilin.

According to him, “Zelensky, who in a year in office never bothered to order a ceasefire, is directly to blame for these deaths”.

Indeed, the shelling of Sakhanka is far from being an isolated incident. Most recently, on May 4th, three children were injured in the village of Aleksandrovka in the west of Donetsk. As was reported at the time by the representative office of the DPR in the Joint Center for Monitoring and Coordination of the Ceasefire Regime (JCCC),… “armed formations of Ukraine purposefully opened fire on the residential areas” of this settlement.

As a result of the fifteen-minute attack, during which 30 BMP-2 shots were fired at civilians’ homes, three underage children were injured: two girls born in 2013 (one of whom received shrapnel to the head, the other – shrapnel in the back) and a girl born in 2010 (she had shrapnel in her leg).

While the Minsk process seems to be creaking, the reports are like from the battlefield, and the most defenceless suffer… And what about the global community? They keep quiet.

This fact was also noted by Pushilin.

“Ukraine continues to terrorise the population of the Republic, especially by doing so before our dear holidays, this time on the eve of Victory Day. Such actions are feasible for Ukrainian armed formations because of the acquiescence and indifference of the world community! We demand an appropriate response to such cynical violations of the rules of war and other humanitarian laws. More disregard for injuries inflicted on children will widen the Overton window on the use of the cruelty and impunity of war criminals. On the eve of the Day of Victory over fascism, we call once again to prevent even the possibility of repeating such tragic lessons of history,” the head of the DPR said in a statement.

Yes, these summaries and reports about the wounded and the dead have been perceived as an informational routine in our abnormal “normality” for a long time already. In a horrible reality where we are already seriously promised to clean our brains with some nanorobots. Maybe it’s worth cleaning not brains, but consciences. Think about what is happening: the war continues, it has lasted longer than the Great Patriotic one. And this war is taking place on our land, in our former common country, now divided by new borders and smouldering lines of demarcation…

How to stop this madness?
