Supporters of the former President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili tried to occupy the building of the October palace in the center of Kiev, reports the correspondent of RIA Novosti.
Activists breached the entrance door and, having fought off the National Guard barricaded inside, entered the building. Law enforcement bodies used fire extinguishers. Protesters brought several National Guard soldiers out of the palace, white from the powder of the fire extinguishers.
During the storm three strong bangs were heard from the explosion of firecrackers. 32 law enforcement officers and protesters suffered from the powder of the fire extinguishers.
The police opened a criminal case for the attempted occupation of the October Palace. The Ukrainian deputy Anton Gerashchenko on his page on Facebook wrote that a festive morning performance featuring hundreds of children took place in the building at the time of the storm.
According to the capital’s posters, on Sunday in the October Palace two performances of the jazz group “The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra” were scheduled to take place.
Saakashvili’s supporters, after the call of the politician himself, after the storm soon begun to leave the October Palace to return to Maidan.
Saakashvili said that he didn’t plan to occupy the October Palace and accused the authorities of a provocation.
“They (law enforcement bodies) especially made violence scenes to discredit our movement,” said the politician.
According to Saakashvili, he planned to carry out “an action with the participation of wives of military political prisoners just in one of rooms in the October Palace”.
“Just look at what is going on! The Ambassadors of Canada and Britain in Ukraine at the same time suddenly realised that attempts to seize administrative buildings are unacceptable. In 2013-2014, they didn’t know about this!”
